NET ZERO BY 2030
Since day one of MR MARVIS, we've always worked hard to minimise the impact we have on the planet. By sourcing locally, using certified materials and creating garments that are meant to last. At the same time, we are aware of the reputation of our industry. Action is required on a short term to minimise the detrimental effects of global warming. That's why we have set the ambitious goal of becoming net zero by 2030. Net zero means that you've reduced your carbon emissions to a minimum and compensate for the remainder of your emissions with regreening projects.
COMPENSATING WITH JUSTDIGGIT
Our focus lies on reduction first, then compensation. Because we realise very well that compensation is not the ultimate solution for global warming. But despite all the well-founded critiques one might have, we believe it's better than doing nothing at all. Meanwhile, our direct focus lies on reducing emissions to a minimum.
Nevertheless, there will always be some emissions we can not reduce. Since April '21 we therefore overcompensate for our emissions through regreening projects with Justdiggit. We say overcompensate because we compensate 10% more CO2 than we measure. We do so because measuring your carbon footprint always comes with insecurities. By compensating more than we have to, we build in a safety margin.
FIRST STEPS TOWARDS A MORE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT
We do not change the fit & design of our garments, that's a promise we will keep. But that does not mean we don't improve the production methods and materials we use.
Choosing the right fabric
All the materials we use are Oeko-Tex certified or more. The Oeko-Tex certification means that the textile is tested for harmful substances. A growing number of our garments are made of organic or recycled cotton. Organic cotton is produced without the use of any synthetic pesticides and leaves a smaller carbon footprint than regular cotton. The organic cotton we use is certified with OCS (Organic Cotton Standard) or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). The recycled cotton and polyamide we use is certified according to the Global Recycle Standard (GRS). For 2022, we have set the ambition to use organic or recycled cotton in all our shorts & trousers. This will result in a 15% reduction of our carbon emissions.
Conscious dyeing
To give colour to our garments, we only work with dye houses that comply with EU regulations on the conscious use of chemicals (REACH). These dye houses are licensed to use water from a nearby river, filter out any harmful substances after use and let the clean water flow back into the river. This saves a lot of water and energy usage in the process.
OUR GOAL: ZERO WASTE
Every day, we work towards the ultimate goal of creating a marvellous garment with zero waste. To reach this goal, the first step is of course to create premium quality shorts & trousers with a timeless design that are made to last for years. Secondly, we make sure that we use our resources efficiently. For example, our shorts and trousers do not come with spare buttons. Because in our experience, most of the time these end up in waste. On the rare occasion a button comes off, you can contact us and we are happy to provide you with a new one for free. Another example is that we take the fabric we can not use for garments anymore and use it to create tote bags for our stores.
SOCIAL IMPACT
Making people around the world feel marvellous sometimes requires more than consciously produced garments. That’s why we work with multiple organisations to engage in broader topics that go beyond the scope of our business. Examples are donations to charities and voluntary work by our team.
